Description

The fruiting bodies are annual, usually located low to the ground on tree trunks or stumps. At the first stage of development, the sulphur-yellow trutus looks like a drop-shaped yellowish fleshy mass of intensely yellow to orange color (“swelling form”). Gradually, the fruiting body hardens, acquiring the “ear” shape characteristic of trutoviks, consisting of several fan-shaped pseudo-flats, often sitting on one common base, occasionally solitary. Cap size ranges from 10 to 40 cm. Maximum thickness at the tree trunk is about 7 cm. The weight of the mushroom may reach 10 kg or more. The edges of the fruiting bodies are wavy and divided into lobes by deep cracks. The mushroom is always covered with a light fluff of creamy-yellow color. The flesh is soft and juicy, rather brittle, white in color, sour to the taste. The odor is faint, initially lemon, and later becomes unpleasant, similar to mouse odor. When dried, the pulp becomes brittle, fibrous and very light.

The hymenophore is tubular with small rounded or toothed pores (3-5 per mm). Young mushrooms exude watery yellow droplets profusely. The tubes are yellow, short, 2-4 mm long.
